Cyril was a bad egg, to put it very nicely, and of course there were people, with very good reason, who wished to get rid of him. And it stands to reason that someone like Hypatia would be sympathetic to the opposition to Cyril. But one of the main reasons for Hypatia's sympathy, obviously, is that even by the Christian standards of the day, Cyril was especially hell-bent on using violence against his religious enemies.Apuleius Platonicushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11761230673724504084noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7817911217098974229.post-71423663788992956602010-10-19T18:32:58.944-04:002010-10-19T18:32:58.944-04:00Kullervo: that must have been a great show!Kullervo: that must have been a great show!Apuleius Platonicushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11761230673724504084noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7817911217098974229.post-91505810790204125952010-10-19T16:12:34.085-04:002010-10-19T16:12:34.085-04:00That was moving and powerful.
The name of the ban...That was moving and powerful.
The name of the band reminded me of Tyr, the ancient Phoenician city on the eastern Mediterranean coast and the mother city of Carthage.
The great flame in the middle of Tyr in the temple of Melqart kept burning for a long time after Christianity came. The pagans in Tyr resisted to the extent that their tradition was still alive even after the Islamic invasion, and in historical documents it's mentioned that when the Crusades arrived in the 11th century they found a tiny minority of Pagans in the city who still practiced their faith publicly.
Being the last Pagans in eastern Mediterranean area, they were the first to be slain by the two monotheisms fighting over the city.

Hail to all our ancestors who fell while fighting, and to all those who are rising again!Tonyhttp://www.ninars.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7817911217098974229.post-83408752164857773442010-10-19T08:41:46.820-04:002010-10-19T08:41:46.820-04:00I would be interested to read your thoughts on the...I would be interested to read your thoughts on the whole Hypatia episode, as many reviews by Catholics seem to regard the new movie, Agora, as a hit piece against Christianity. I do believe that most scholars conclude that she was not lynched explicitly because she was a pagan, but being pagan and a woman certainly didn't help. I have also read reviews by Neoplatonic scholars saying that they portrayed her more as an Enlightenment rationalist than a believing pagan. I don't know if you've seen the movie (Netflix says that it is sending it to me today), but if you have, it would be interesting to know your thoughts.

-An unenthusiastic member of "team Jesus"Arturo Vasquezhttp://arturovasquez.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7817911217098974229.post-11349117443380713112010-10-18T23:00:37.729-04:002010-10-18T23:00:37.729-04:00Powerfully important stuff. May this history, and the brave men and women who made, never be forgot.

(In fact, this would make an awesome alt.history tale - though Harry Harrison sort of did that with the Hammer and Cross series, which I highly recommend if you haven't read them.)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7817911217098974229.post-67926013694563020182010-10-18T21:36:44.096-04:002010-10-18T21:36:44.096-04:00Well put, Apuleius. I did not know so much about Arbogast before, but I think I will be drinking to him this Friday night as well.
