In fact, one of those aboard, Kevin Ovenden, a former George Galloway staffer who spoke to the British leftist paper Morning Star, revealed that the ship's Turkish crew abducted two IDF soldiers who had been wounded in the course of the melee and held them captive:
Mr Ovenden praised the Turkish crew of the vessel as "truly heroic in their attempts to prevent further loss of life," saying they had taken two injured Israeli soldiers inside the ship to prevent them being hurt further in the panic and chaos. From the reports I've seen there was only serious violence on board the Mavi Marmara (there were five other ships boarded and seized by the IDF at the same time), which indicates that there was something different about this particular ship -- probably the people on it.
Here is a video of the fighting onboard the Mavi Marmara:
And here is a video that shows preparations on board the Mavi Marmara just prior to the beginning of the IDF boarding:
Here is a third video showing the greeting given to the IDF by the "peace activists" aboard the Mavi Marmara:
I would be most skeptical of such videos. We are dealing with experts in spin. It may be some time before the full truth comes out. Suffice it to say I have friends in the peace movement who personally knew the people on board, and they declaim that all of this is propaganda.
ReplyDeleteI agree that skepticism is in order. However the statement from Kevin Ovenden is quite damning in that it confirms that IDF soldiers were injured and held captive by the ship's crew during the course of the struggle. This statement was given by Ovenden after he was released to a "friendly" (to him) source.
ReplyDeleteAlso to my knowledge no one has claimed that these videos were in any way faked.
But to the extent that we cannot be certain about what really happened it is all the more necessary to avoid a rush to judgement.
I just heard Kevin Neish, a Canadian citizen aboard the ship, being interviewed on Democracy Now. He stated that he saw two IDF soldiers being held by members of the ship's crew. Neish stated that the soldiers were "stripped of their weapons".

ReplyDeleteOften with this kind of thing it's about collecting as many different versions and fragments as possible, and then trying to fit them together jigsaw style.
Here's a couple more pieces :
