The vote was 335 to 1.That was in the lower house of Parliament. The bill must still be passed by the French Senate. The vote is scheduled for September, and it is expected to pass. (More details at CNN.com: "Burqa ban passes French lower house overwhelmingly".)
Polling has shown that 82% of French people support the ban, according to the Pew Research Center. Comfortable majorities also support such a ban in Britain (62%), Germany (71%), and Spain (59%).
Belgium's lower house of Parliament already passed (unanimously) a similar ban in April (see USA Today article here).
Similar legislation has received strong support in the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark, but so far those countries have yet to put a ban into law.
