Egypt is a Muslim majority country that has just gone through a cataclysmic upheaval of their society which has shattered a decade’s long dictatorship based on a corrupted Western Democratic model. Of course they will support the establishment of firm laws they understand and is based in their culture and majority faith. (True Democracy is for all, not just for Western countries, majority rules). Of course supporting an organisation that (is not as radical as the Republican Hawks would have you believe and) have provided an informal social security network for Egyptians for decades seems normal. (Would you demonise the Salvation Army?) There are no surprises here.
The Australian Labor Party has a historical commitment to the creation of a Democratic Socialist movement supported by Unionism which will move Australia to becoming a Socialist nation in the long term in a Socialist world. Quote from their current constitution "commitment to and participation in the international democratic socialist movement as represented by the Socialist International". We haven't seen it yet and they've been in power enough times and long enough in the last 100 years...
Take the posture of the MB with a grain of salt. True Sharia Law in comparison with many religous law positions is quite liberal (e.g. Extremist Hindu for example) in regards to freedoms of belief and social responsibility when enacted in the true sense of the Law, not the narrow field of interpretation carried by extremist and terrorist organisations
Opposition groups/movements find the actual management of a nation often precludes them from achieving their former agendas effectively due to the act of governance itself.
Sit back, work to support democratic activity and let the Egyptian people sort it out via Democratic methods the West has been pushing on the world for the last 100 years.
The difference is that in a genuinely revolutionary situation, like the situation that now pertains essentially throughout the Arab world, groups with revolutionary agendas can, and do, put those agendas into action.
So, should we also give the Tea Partiers and Christian Dominionists a pass because we all know they will have to compromise and will never really achieve their stated aims?
HHa ha ha, it would be nice to say no, they can't have a voice, but that would be challenging the basis of the American Culture, the free expression of thought, religion and action. You have to work on supporting the rational and moderate side of politics and removing the influence and sway of loud, aggressive, extreme, but in reality quite small, political movements
I agree that Egypt is at an incredibly important tipping point. It is up to the support and enhancement of democratic impulses by international organisations: NGO's and GO's; to make sure that a robust and healthy democracy is created that allows the expression of all members of Egypt's population. Whether that happens is up to the international community and the moderate Egyptian's within and without of the country.

"Extremist Hindu" positions? In relation to Sharia law? You've got to be kidding!

"“India, with a population of over a billion persons, with 18 official languages, 500+ distinct Jatis (tribal, linguistic affiliations), with active insurgencies wishing for independent country status, somehow manages to remain the most multi-cultural, multi-ethnic place in the world, bar none, as a whole. Yes of course there are challenges with this much diversity, but also untold richness. In spite of still being in the process of recovery from 1000 years of Islamic invasions, 200 years of English colonial rule which saw the GDP drop precipitiously as the British diverted resources and industry away from the local population, India is still emerging as a world power in the near future. In fact, the Indian govt. subsidizes the Hajj (pilgrimage to Mecca) for poor Muslims ... "
Comment moderation on for all posts older than 4 days. However, I never censor or block views of people that I disagree with, unlike some intellectually lazy cowards.
