Digging up another old post that still seems relevant. This one originally appeared on April 3, 2011. And be sure to check out the list of other blasphemous material at the bottom.

Christian preacher Terry Jones finally made good on his threat to burn the Koran. And, predictably, this has resulted in a wave of deadly violence in the Muslim world.
They say a picture is worth a thousand words. The following images say more than any quantity of words ever could about how different Islam is from other religions, including even it's closest rival for most violent and intolerant religion of all time.
It is worth pointing out that many, probably most, of the following examples of blasphemy were in large part motivated by a desire to grab attention, and also were done with the intention of being offensive, or at least in the full knowledge that they would be offensive.

I disagree with the tone. Christians may not be having well publicized "deadly riots" due to blasphemy, but they are creating them in Africa. The witchhunts in Africa are all about American Evangelicals getting their hatred out in a place with less accountability.
ReplyDeleteThe difference, in my opinion, is that Christianity has, to some extent, been put on a leash. A rabid dog on a leash is still very dangerous, but it is better than one allowed to run freely. Islam, on the other hand, still practices some form of outright theocracy in every Muslim majority country, even in Turkey which is supposedly "secular".
ReplyDeleteAlso, here in the West the right to insult and blaspheme against Christianity is secure, but the right to say openly what one thinks about Islam is on the chopping block.
Every religion deserves blasphemy. Christianity, Islam, Paganism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and all the rest of them. I don't care who you are - you deserve to be made fun of. Your level of maturity will be determined by how many people you manage not to murder in response.
ReplyDeleteI think on a global level, Christianity and Christian culture has been AS or MORE murderous than Islam.
ReplyDeleteHowever, on the micro-level – that is, when we’re talking about the response to offending religious sensibilities – there IS a difference between Christian and Muslim responses. It is probably related to the cultural history (or lack thereof) of free speech and church/state separation…
But take one of your examples here: “The Last Temptation of Christ.” It’s easily compared to “The Satanic Verses.” Now, personally, I find Kazantzakis’ book about Christ to be thought-provoking and pretty great, but it offends a lot of Christians.
On the other hand, if anyone even JOKED about making a movie out of Salman Rushdie’s WORST novel, “The Satanic Verses,” they’d immediately be a marked man.
There are probably perfectly logical reasons for that, but I don’t know them…
Hey, you missed "Jesus Christ, Serial Rapist"
