Death by Exorcism, American Style: More Deep Background on the Murder of Kristy Bamu

Pentecostalism grew out of the "holiness" movement of the 19th century, which in turn was firmly rooted in Methodism/Arminianism, and especially in the theology of John Wesley. (For more on the historical and theological roots of Pentecostalism, see the links at the bottom of this post.)

The English theologian John Wesley (1703-1791) bemoaned the end of the Witch-Hunts and the decline in belief in Witchcraft: "the giving up of witchcraft is in effect giving up the Bible. With my latest breath I will bear testimony against giving up to infidels one great proof of the invisible world; I mean that of witchcraft and apparitions, confirmed by the testimony of all ages." [John Wesley, Journal, ed. N. Curnock (8 vols., 1909 16), entry for 25 May 1768.] Two years after the just quoted journal entry, Wesley once again explicitly blamed the end of the Witch-Hunts on the ascendancy of "infidels", made possible only by the acquiescence of "complaisant Christians" [journal entry for July 4, 1770].

So the theological foundations of Pentecostalism include the fervent desire to return to the days when Witchcraft was an aggressively prosecuted capital crime! In that light perhaps it should come as no surprise that to this day Pentecostalists, and other spiritual heirs of John Wesley, continue to pursue the agenda of spiritual warfare, and that this sometime ends very tragically.

Exorcism Thriving in U.S., Say Experts (This 2001 CBS News report cites several cases of exorcisms in the US that have resulted in death)

The devil must be busier than ever in the new millennium. Exorcism, the ancient rite of casting out Satan and his demons from the souls of the possessed, is thriving in America and was long before recent revelations that Mother Teresa underwent one and Pope John Paul II performed them. "It is a big phenomenon," J. Gordon Melton, a Methodist minister who directs the Institute for the Study of American Religion, says of exorcisms in the United States. What many might consider an archaic and obscure rite has been front-page news this year. Last week, the Archbishop of Calcutta, Henry Sebastian D'Souza, announced that he ordered an exorcism performed on Mother Teresa before she died in 1997 ....

Holy crap. When Grant Morrison showed an exorcism that ended in death by physical violence in 1991 or so in his Kid Eternity mini series I thought that it was a bit of an exaggeration (granted, the "exorcist" was a demon in disguise). It seems I was wrong.
